La Vida is located in the heart of the best residential area of Bucerias. Just 15 minutes north of the Puerto Vallarta airport, Bucerias is a world away from the hustle and bustle of Vallarta. In the early morning, you may see a local fisherman casting a hand-line wrapped around a Coke bottle, a diver looking for oysters, or a pescador perched on his innertube, casting his net.

At night, you can wander out to have dinner at one of Bucerias’ many great restaurants, including the incomparable Mark’s Bar and Grill, just 2 blocks away. Or wander a little further, and take in the sights and sounds surrounding Bucerias’ central plaza. Here, you can enjoy a wonderful bowl of pozole, a freshly-made churro, a grilled ear of corn, or some super tacos.

On fiesta days (and there are lots of these) you will be privileged to see a slice of genuine Mexican town life. Like the day in January when we honor Bucerias’ patron Saint, the Virgen de la Paz. In the morning, the charro vaqueros ride in to town on their splendid horses sporting impossibly huge sombreros. In the afternoon, the fishing pangas sail over from La Cruz bedecked in colorful and utterly outlandish decorations. They have a contest to see who can be the most reckless as they drive their boats up onto the beach to be blessed by the Padre. And at night, there are colorful stalls selling all kinds of things. Plus rides for the kids. And at midnight, we light 2-story-tall Castillo loaded with fireworks and firecrackers.

While Bucerias is a very special village and a wonderful place to live, sooner or later you’ll need a little adrenaline kick. That’s when you’ll head to Vallarta, the most beautiful city in coastal Mexico. Falling down the mountains to the sea, Vallarta feels very European. It’s just a short hop away, and there you will find great shopping and wonderful restaurants. But mostly, you’ll probably just want to stay right here in Bucerias. The thing about Bucerias is, it’s real. It’s for people who want to experience Mexico, not escape from it.
